Homeowner guideGarage Doors and Hurricane Season on the Gulf Coast
In many homes the garage door is the largest opening. If it fails in high winds, wind can enter the garage and put pressure on the roof and walls. Here is what to look at before storm season.
Know what you have
Wind-load rated doors carry a label or documentation showing their design pressure. Older doors often have no rating.
Options
- Wind-rated replacement door built for the design pressure required in your area.
- Retrofit bracing kits that reinforce an existing door, where the manufacturer allows it.
- Hardware check: tracks, rollers and fasteners in good condition, without heavy rust.
Before a storm
- Make sure the door closes fully and locks.
- Do not leave the door partly open.
- Check local building code requirements before replacing a door.
